Daucus carota

Purple carrot with a yellow interior and strong flavour, probably originating in the Orient.

The original, cultivated carrots probably had mainly dark brown, purple to light-coloured roots and were not orange at first. The varieties currently advertised as "original carrots" are unfortunately often modern hybrids. The "Black Spanish", on the other hand, really has a historical context and probably came to Europe via the Arab conquest of Spain. The reason for the purple colouring is the anthocyanins it contains, which are also found in blue grapes, blackcurrants and blackberries.
